MAGICAL MINDS

Nurture Your Magical Mind

Your mind is amazing. It is constantly predicting and making sense of the world around you. While this helps us thrive in good times, it can also work against us when life gets tough.

This workbook is about how magical our minds are, how they work and how to nurture them.

It's based on a lifetime of thinking about the mind and consciousness, and on two decades of applied Educational Psychology work with a very wide range of young people, schools and families.

The workbook contains THEORY about how the mind works, PRACTICAL ACTIVITIES to run a short programme to DEVELOP RESILIENCE with the group that you are part of, and IDEAS TO DEVELOP THE ENVIRONMENT around you. It isn't a "magic wand", but a practical and accessible springboard to enable existing strengths.

What Makes This Book Different?

  • Real-World Application: Designed to be done with young people in their everyday spaces—not confined to a therapy room or intervention space.

  • Whole-System Impact: Simultaneously builds individual capacity, strengthens relationships, and creates positive and nurturing environments.

  • Everyday Psychology: Draws on predictive- processing, acceptance-commitment, narrative, and strength based psychologies in a way that is accessible to read.

  • Proactive Well-being: A universal resource to pro-actively support positive mental health and resilience for all —not just something for when difficulty arises.

The 5 Rs Framework

Our hands-on activities rely on 5 core pillars to deliver practical, engaging sessions:

  • Relational: Building deep, meaningful connections.

  • Representation: Making sense of our lives by sharing important stories.

  • Recreational: Having fun and learning through play.

  • Regulation: Developing emotional tools and self-control.

  • Resources: Building environmental and personal support systems.

Resilience is the capacity of a whole system (the mind, the child, the family, the school, society) to work well together to flexibly withstand, navigate, and develop from unpredictable change and adversity. The 5 ‘R’s above cover all parts of the system and the workbook builds across their relationships to strengthen deep resilience.
